It is a classic paradigm: wheels are round and black. All except the Pirelli P Zero Color Edition, that is. This possibility is being offered to prestige car owners, for whom customisation is a priority but, before coloured tyres, the choice of colour concerned the body and the interiors. And, as the Color Edition was from the onset an option reserved for road tyres, now another novelty has come about: the safety car of the single-marque motorsport trophy will be fitted with P Zero Color Edition tyres, taking different shades onto the track depending on the leg of the championship. For the initial race, Spa-Francorchamps in Belgium, the chosen colour is yellow, which matches the shade in the middle strip of the country's flag.

The colours picked for the Pirelli P Zero on the Ferrari 488 GTB breaking the seal at the Challenge on the most beguiling circuits recall local colours, but that's not all. The colour red in Misano Adriatico, the home of motorsports, the national flag blue in Brno, and also the gold part of the national flag selected for Barcelona. The jury isn't yet out for the colour chosen for the World Finals in Monza, from 1st to 4th November: at the final championship race, Pirelli's social channel followers will get to pick which colour is to represent the leg in the Temple of speed.

Seven standard colours for the P Zero Color Edition and hundreds more bespoke shades on offer on the dedicated website. Yet colour is not enough: the Bicocca research and development centre has identified the technologies which make it possible to apply colours through the use of cutting-edge materials, capable of not modifying the performance characteristics of the tyre while at the same time creating a protective barrier that retains gloss and reduces the risk of the colour flaking and chipping, caused by wear and by the passing of time.
